Currently the configurator does not support custom macro's and a few other things that I would like to try. Is it possible to compile KLL on my own? What do I need to do to make it work?

Yes KLL can be compiled yourself. You can find instructions on our GitHub page and instructions in the wiki associated with it.

I found this guide on reddit to be helpful. It's labelled for Linux, but a lot of the information isn't specific to Linux:

Modifying Firmware for Advanced Macros

Part 3 is also helpful for customizing the images on your LCD. You probably don't need part 1.
